The internet and social media is going to erode the power the society has over these young people, and it will happen publicly, for all to view.

I have a 5 and 7 year old, and they fully comprehend what is going on with my JW parents. Sadly for them, they never got a Christmas with grandparents. My daughter's kids, who are now forced to be JW's, DO remember birthday parties and our big family Christmas gatherings. That ended 5 years ago.
We are making our own memories with our children now. I still mourn for the fun and memories that could have been, but my kids are too full of joy and innocence. We are having a wonderful time this year, decorating with more Christmas lights than ever, wrapping presents, making treats and playing Christmas music. These are memories like I made with my mom as a child. Too bad she has to miss it this time around.

JW's are not a cult. Just ask them.
If they do see the connection, they might ask themselves, "Are cults really a BAD thing?"

Question
by Fading Begins ini am sure that this has already been discussed, so maybe someone could direct me to the correct link.
i just haven't been able to access this site as often as i would like.
at the meeting tonight (i wasn't there but was told about it), the brothers were told to pack up a "survival kit" with enough provisions to last for six months - water, medications etc.

Sounds like a reminder that it's "every man for himself," when you are a member of this organization. There will be no emergency assistance coming down from the tower.

HELP: the cross or the stake
by never a jw injust asking for help from the vast number of very knowledgeable people here.
when was the "stake" doctrine adopted by jw's and what publication contains that information.
thank you..

Searcher, great points. The "cross vs. stake" argument didn't get far in our house either. My husband made similar points to what you said.
The JW's get hung up on these details, and overlook the big picture. They miss the whole message of redemption and salvation.

Oh!
I thought the shunning was a form of punishment, used in order to encourage the wandering sheep to repent and return to the fold.
True friendship can only be found inside the walls of the society. The love this organization has for its members, is amazing!

Comment from my dad, "They are smarter than me."
by Faithful Witness inmy jw (converts of about 5 years) came over on thursday and ate a turkey dinner with us.
we didn't call it thanksgiving, but that was obviously what it was.
they were proud to give me my own copy of the new revised and improved nwt bible.

These are awesome replies! Thanks.
Black Sheep: I might plant some seeds for critical thinking at Christmas?? ;) I get only rare occasions with my dad.
Any suggestions for thought-provoking questions are welcome.

He also made the comment that there are more features to be added to the app. That will be interesting.

My JW (converts of about 5 years) came over on Thursday and ate a turkey dinner with us. We didn't call it Thanksgiving, but that was obviously what it was. They were proud to give me my own copy of the new revised and improved NWT Bible. I admired the quality with them, and thanked them for bringing it to me. I guess they now have a whole stack of them at the KH, due to backorders that were filled for people who already got their copy at the annual meeting.
My dad was telling me about the JW Library app for the iPad. I admitted that I already had it, and had explored it a little bit. We talked about how cool it was. He made the same statement 3 times during this short conversation: "I don't know, they are smarter than me," when he was marveling at the features on this new app.
This statement is unusual for the father who raised me. I am a lot like him, and I like to think for myself. I know he's getting older, in his late 60's now, but I find this curious. I did not comment on it, but was supportive of all he said. I will have JW-related conversations and seed planting at other times then his agreeing to come to my house for a pagan celebration. I was glad he came over, and didn't want him to leave with any feeling but approval and love from me.
Going along with some other comments people have made recently, I wanted to add this observation. He has clearly submitted to the organization and the authority of the governing body. Since he repeated this particular statement 3 times, I don't think it was his own. He must have picked that line up from someone at the KH.
They are not smarter than you!!
My mom has actually agreed to stop by sometime during our CHRISTMAS celebration weekend at my house, and my dad might come also! This is huge, so I am not going to even say a word about anything JW until the new year. (After that, game is back on!)

A very nice JW tried to give me a pamphlet today at my door

i greeted a very nice jw lady on my doorstep.
she wanted to give me a pamphlet about whether the dead will live again.

I do think she may have had an "Oh shoot" moment, when she got to Matthew 6:4.
When I had mentioned that Jesus told us to practice our righteousness in secret, she said, "He never said that!"
She was a very nice lady, and I would love the chance to talk to her again. I find it interesting that they keep sending different JW's to my door. Why is it never the same person?
